Collection of Prada-NASA lunar spacesuits for artemis III

Prada will design and produce NASA’s lunar spacesuits for the Artemis III mission planned for 2025. It will also be the first lunar mission to place a woman on the Moon. In collaboration with Axiom Space, the architect of the world’s first commercial space station, the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit aims to ensure that the astronauts will be equipped with comfort and advanced capabilities during their moon exploration and for the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in December 1972.

Prada’s engineers will work alongside the Axiom Space Systems team throughout the design process to develop materials and design features that will protect the astronauts against potential environmental problems while in space and in the lunar environment. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director, says that Prada’s decades of experimentation and design know-how – ‘which started back in the ‘90s with Luna Rossa challenging for the America’s Cup’ – will now be applied to the design of NASA’s lunar spacesuits for the Artemis era.

Axiom space spacesuits with advanced technologies

So far, Prada and Axiom Space say that these new Axiom Space spacesuits – drawing upon NASA’s own Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit design – are an improved version of NASA’s clothing that astronauts use for spacewalks. These are designed to be more flexible, provide better protection against the tough conditions of space, and come with advanced tools that can enable the astronauts to experiment and explore the moon with ease.

These suits are dubbed to use new and advanced technologies and design techniques to help astronauts explore the moon more effectively, but Prada and Axiom Space have yet to underline what these features are. Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space, says that ‘Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from spacesuits.’
