Design reveal of Prada and axiom space’s NASA lunar spacesuits

Prada and Axiom Space reveal the final design it tailors for NASA’s lunar spacesuits, suited for the Artemis III mission planned for 2026. At the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, Italy, the fashion brand and the spaceflight company shared that they’ve completed pressurized simulations of the NASA lunar spacesuits with their partners, including SpaceX. The suit is set to undergo crewed underwater tests at the NBL facility and integrated tests with the Artemis Lunar Terrain Vehicle prototypes. The lunar spacesuits enter the design review phase in 2025.

As first reported by designboom in May 2023, the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit aims to ensure that astronauts are equipped with advanced capabilities during their moon exploration and for the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in December 1972. On October 16th, 2024, Prada and Axiom Space finally released the most recent design of the NASA lunar spacesuits, layered with a white material that reflects heat to protect astronauts from extreme high temperatures and lunar dust.

So far, Prada and Axiom Space say that these new Axiom Space spacesuits – drawing upon NASA’s own Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit design – are an improved version of NASA’s clothing that astronauts use for spacewalks. These are designed to be more flexible, provide better protection against the tough conditions of space, and come with advanced tools that can enable the astronauts to experiment and explore the moon with ease.

These suits are dubbed to use new and advanced technologies and design techniques to help astronauts explore the moon more effectively, but Prada and Axiom Space have yet to underline what these features are. Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space, says that ‘Prada’s technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from spacesuits.’

The articles was updated on October 17th, 2024 to reflect the recent announcements regarding the design reveal.
