when you analyze various creative disciplines, it’s easy to see how certain characteristics overlap and intertwine. this mentality has led to multiple collaborations between studios, hybrids projects combining seemingly opposite worlds, and even endeavors in which designers apply their skills in one field to another. this is a phenomenon that resulted in the creation of quentin de coster‘s ‘lianes’ installation for two’star michelin restaurant l’air du temps.

the story began at a conference in march of 2013. during this event, chef sang-hoon degeimbre and de coster each presented their work and noted many common points between their respective artistic worlds. a year later, degeimbre invited the designer to develop an atmosphere aligned with his culinary expertise.

san’s cooking at l’air du temps embodies nature. as a result, de coster incorporated organic qualities in his permanent installation and says, ‘lianes is an abstract reproduction of the random character of vegetation.’ by using multiple strands of white polyester rope, a haphazard arrangement spatially manipulates the dining room in a way that juxtaposes the indoor and outdoor environments. each individual piece is secured to the ceiling using MDF and pine battens.
