when approached by established & sons to propose a bespoke piece for london design festival 2015, raw edges saw the opportunity to take their 2008 design ‘stack’ a to new heights. back in the day when the piece was created, the creative duo were exploring color, its different combinations and the attraction they could generate in people from various arrangemens. with this redesigned edition, the raw edges team took a step forward and decided to experiment with alternative materials and textures. the existing lacquered panels were replaced with other mediums found in their studio, like leftovers from other projects or mediums related to their everyday work, including: metal, perspex, marble, corian, canvas, ceramic, felt and leather.

the diverse selection of materials not only add a selection of new hues, but the introduction of new textures and finishes that enhance the design. each one of the drawer units can be pushed or pulled in both directions, giving ‘stack’ the ability to mutate into random and asymmetrical forms. its overall aesthetic is that of a sculpture that questions balance and harmony, as well as material relationships and interactions.

the idea behind the bespoke edition for established & sons is to open up a market for collectors that are attracted to the idea of having a special piece of furniture, giving the designer the free reign to customize it for them so that it becomes a unique object. as emphasized by maurizio mussatti’s (CEO established & sons) words, ‘established & sons acts as a design laboratory. no design remains frozen in time, our designers are free to follow their own instincts as they continue to experiment with a design’s potential. these new bespoke ‘stack’ are complex creations. we relied on our wide network of artisan studios to source the very varied materials raw-edges selected for this engaging project.’
