more than 11,000 creatives hailing from 123 countries have registered for LE GRAND PRIX DU CARRÉ HERMÈS, setting their sights on designing an Hermès scarf print! the first phase of the global scarf design competition came to a close on may 31, 2019 and — with a total of 11,366 registered participations received — designboom has established a new world record in the organization of international creative competitions. the free-to-enter scarf design competition has been open to anyone possessing artistic talents, such as designers, artists, illustrators, graphic designers, draftsmen, whether professional or amateur.

after examining the applications, the Hermès jury will select around 100 candidates by mid-july 2019 to participate in phase 2 of the competition, which will see each contender outline their presentation for the design of an Hermès scarf. from those applications, around 10 will be chosen towards mid-october 2019 to continue on to phase 3: production of a final design to scale. those selected will be invited to spend two days at Hermès in paris, following which they will finalize their scarf design to scale. finally, the Hermès jury will designate one to three winners, whose names will be revealed in march 2020 and published on designboom. Hermès will purchase the originals of the competition winners’ designs with a view to reproduction in one of its future collections.

since 1937, Hermès has reproduced over 2,000 original designs on silk for its scarf collections. designers from all backgrounds have distinguished themselves in this exercise in composition and narrative. time after time, young graphic artists or experienced designers from around the world have devoted their talent to ever-contemporary creativity. above all a space for freedom, the scarf is nourished by paradoxes, as Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Hermès artistic director, explains: enigmatic yet clear, simple yet luxuriant, meaningful yet mysterious right down to the tiniest detail; enclosed within a limited space yet free, open to infinite interpretations.

good luck to all the applicants of LE GRAND PRIX DU CARRÉ HERMÈS!
