rich holland enlivens southampton’s skating scene

After designing numerous skateparks around the globe, Rich Holland is now working on revamping Southampton’s skating scene with an inclusive new park fitted with a series of furniture objects. His new project in collaboration with Skate Southampton is set to be unveiled later in the year, transforming the existing space at Guildhall Square to make a more open, engaging, inclusive, and visually appealing skating area.

In the meantime, the designer has unveiled a sneak peak at the first prototype for the PSFF Bench — a sculptural furniture object 3D printed from concrete. While enhancing the square, the benches are also aimed at providing an off-the-shelf solution for supplying public skateboard-focused furniture for cities around the world.

sports-focused benches made solely from concrete

Since 2000, global designer Rich Holland has been exploring and pushing the design boundaries of action sports — particularly with skateboard-focused objects and landscapes. His last major work was the ideation, strategy, and design behind the Nike skate landscape which brought an architectural skatepark to the brand’s Netherlands headquarters.

With his upcoming collaboration, his new creation will be bringing a touch of his signature sweeping skate landscapes and minimalist concrete materiality to the Southampton skating community. The project involves a series of 3D printed sports-focused public furniture objects made solely from concrete. The particular 3D printing process was created in collaboration with Eindhoven University of Technology and contractor BAM Infra for a new optimized production method that delivers high-quality construction products each time.
