In an exciting cross-disciplinary collaboration, RIMOWA teams with Wine Access to celebrate the upcoming launch of its Twelve Bottle Case, created to carry and protect wine bottles on the move. The new piece is emblematic of the legendary brand, not just with its familiar aluminum body, but with its highly specialized design crafted through meticulous engineering. The luxury luggage specialists have been perfecting this craft since 1898, rising to becoming the gold standard for those traveling the world with purpose — often toting highly specialized equipment which require a well-made, protective travel case.

RIMOWA hosts designboom in California’s Napa Valley during its peak harvest season to offer an up-close look at the Twelve Bottle Case ahead of its launch next month, along with the Heritage Vineyards of Andy Beckstoffer, ‘Napa’s most powerful grape grower’ who personally approved the collaboration.

a custom-engineered case inside a classic shell

The Cologne-based design team at RIMOWA has crafted the new Twelve Bottle Case from its signature anodized grooved aluminum. From the outside, the piece is instantly recognized by its iconic heritage. Like the Classic line, the minimalist shell is punctuated by corners of high-gloss aluminum, and can be gripped with a handle of black leather. These elements are deliberately integrated to recall the familiar vintage design language in celebration of the brand’s heritage.

Meanwhile, the Twelve Bottle Case opens up to showcase a highly-customized interior. A thoughtfully-crafted system of padded cushions of varied thicknesses serve to wedge the bottle necks into place according to size. Any standard wine bottle, even wider champagne bottles, can easily fit inside.

When open, an integrated support system ensures stability. Once closed, the base can be locked on each side. The interior is finished in a microfiber material and features safety bars which secure the bottles during transport. Of course, the case is fit with two TSA-approved locks for further security during travel. The Twelve Bottle Case will be available for purchase at $9,900 USD starting November 25th, 2022.

This is not the first time the German maison has collaborated with other design giants, specially shaping its cases according to its cargo. From Bang & Olufsen headphones and Apple iPhones, to Aesop grooming essentials and Daniel Arsham artwork, Rimowa cases have long been transformed into customized sizes large and small.

Through RIMOWA’s partnership with Wine Access — a premium, Napa-founded online wine specialty store — aficionados have even more to look forward to. The company has curated a limited edition twelve-bottle set of rare Cabernets from the Heritage Vineyards of the revolutionary grower Andy Beckstoffer. The full twelve-bottle collection is available now for purchase at $3,010 USD.

The conception of the Twelve Bottle Case is the result of even another team effort. This newest case might not even exist if not for the vision of NBA superstar LeBron James. While RIMOWA already launched a tiny One Bottle Case last year, a larger concept long existed only in the archives.

The design team recalls the inception of the idea: ‘Long-time friend of the brand LeBron James spotted a stackable archival case that stored wine bottles and glasses. The piece sparked a conversation between noted wine aficionado James and RIMOWA’s engineers, marking the first phase of its creation.

‘Together with RIMOWA engineers, the process of innovation began. With LeBron tracking the progression of its design, the RIMOWA Twelve Bottle Case Silver came to fruition.
