‘syzygy’ light collection by os and oos

 

 

in astronomy, a syzygy [siz-i-jee] is a straight line configuration of three celestial bodies in a gravitational system. the word is often used in reference to the sun, the earth and either the moon or a planet, where the latter is in conjunction or opposition. solar and lunar eclipses occur at times of syzygy, as do transits and occultations.

 

as we experience night only when a part of the earth is cast into shadow from itself as it rotates around the sun,the ‘syzygy’ collection developed by dutch duo oskar peet and sophie mensen of os and oos, is influenced on the same principle, where the illumination source is constant, remaining always on. the ambience is adjusted by a subtle rotation of three light filtering discs places in front of the source. the rotational combinations of these three discs mimic the effects of a syzygy.
