bamboo is a lively material, with different designs and forms, resulting in contemporary objects with flexibility and sustainability. seeing the potential of this wooden plant, sally (hsiao-ying) lin and her studio, sa’bella design, have created a furniture piece called ‘5050’.

leg twist to enhance the structural strength

bent with 25mm slices, imagery of grille are demonstrated on the seat surface, and converge the structures in between with four butterfly rattan weavings. as for the legs, lin challenges the visual appearance by using a smooth, 90-degree twist on each element. in order to enhanced the flexibility of the material before rotating, a special template was produced and a corresponding procedure was executed, helping the craftsmen bend out the forms manually and then slowly adjust them into position. the work is finished with ornamental patterns that compliment the other decorative features.
