kim min hyuk reimagines korean tradition with saero

The Saero series by Kim Min Hyuk of Osori Studio is an abstract and modern reinterpretation of culture and heritage in the form of a sculptural partition and table. Reviving the essence of traditional Korean furniture, Saero breathes new life into age-old designs through the inventive use of contemporary materials such as aluminum profiles and bioplastic alongside 3D printing. Departing from tried and tested approaches, the byeongpung — a screen that typically blocks wind, conceals objects, or stands as a decorative addition to any room — is here reimagined as a sleek centerpiece that recalls historic orientalist paintings.

3d-printed aluminum parts shape the sleek furniture series

Used predominantly in automation machinery, aluminum profiles are utilized by furniture designer Kim Min Hyuk for their lightweight and robust form, eminently suitable for assembly. Intriguingly, the cross-sectional patterns formed across Saero during extrusion bear a striking resemblance to traditional Korean motifs in abstract expressions. These, when replicated across the design, lend a timeless aesthetic to the resulting furniture. Additionally, the aluminum profile, equipped with a rail, accommodates parts crafted through 3D printing of oriental paintings for a seamless fit, culminating in the assembly of modern materials into a stylish, three-dimensional tableau.
