salvatore franzese: procreation + conceived at DMY berlin 2011

italian-born, netherlands-based designer salvatore franzese presented three new works at DMY berlin 2011: his ‘procreation’ lamp, ‘conceived’ chair and table lamp. exploring the genesis of life and artistic creation, franzese uses the layered process of thread-wrapping to construct textured furniture pieces. the hand-crafted technique renders an organic ‘skin’ surface on the item’s metal skeleton profiles.

playing on the idea of giving life and light, franzese explains the connection between his works: ‘the mother of all is represented by the suspension lamp’s shape of a pregnant belly, and its umbilical cord connects it to the ‘conceived’ chair. following the whole production process with the control and definition of the developing phases is indeed like a conception that starts first with a self-analysis and ends with the materialization of a concept, thus giving birth to the piece.’
