while the danish studio of schmidt hammer lassen is best known for their architecture, they also do product design. one of their latest project’s is the ‘solid’ range of urban furniture and LED lighting fixtures. the new line is inspired by the rough characteristics of concrete, using the material to achieve a balance of craft and sustainability. concrete was an optimal choice because of its strength and low-maintenance requirements. schmidt hammer lassen design took this to another level by designing the pieces with a highly detailed finish that contemporary and durable. the LED light fixtures are the highlight of the series and feature a concrete base that is topped with a steel lighting fixture that reflect the LED inside. the ‘solid’ series was recently given a 2009 red dot design award.
