a fusion of aesthetic sensibility with technical precision

David Weeks Studio unveils a new series of limited-edition lamps, each of which is a sculptural expression of Weeks’ unique design language, marrying artistic sensibility with technical precision. The collection of large-scale standing and table-top lighting fixtures, including the Esquire and Otto standing lamps, the Signature Tripod, and the Whiplash Table Lamp, has been created in editions of four. Each piece is the culmination of an explorational process experimenting with mechanics, efficiency, industrial aesthetics, and artistic discovery.

david weeks studio explores sculptural lighting solutions

The semi-annual collection comprises a family of four lighting products, each unique in itself but indebted to its three siblings. As designer David Weeks explains, ‘To make one of something is great—it’s art. To make two—that’s good. But to make three or four, you have to solve problems. Variables come out. You are perfecting the idea, and you should have learned everything it can teach you by that fourth one.’

The slender Otto standing lamp employs the precision-engineering design that defines David Weeks Studio, with a small footprint and a cantilevering sculptural lighting head that defies its sizeable impact. Its minimalist counterpart Esquire standing lamp, designed originally in the early 2000s for the Esquire Showhouse, features an oil-rubbed bronze finish and pill shade.

More sculptural and decorative in design, the Kopra Slim Standing fixture has been fabricated using traditional jewelry-making techniques and stands at a striking 8 feet tall. The Signature Tripod meanwhile stands as a revised edition of a David Weeks Studio icon, revealing a monochromatic finished in oil-rubbed bronze. Finally, the small Whiplash table lamp, which takes its name from the sinuous lines which came to define the art nouveau era, reflects coils and curves of the natural world. Available in black or white ombre, each shade of the Whiplash fixture is hand blown and illuminated by a dimmable LED.
