sebastian herkner applies colombian plastic weaving to caribe collection

maison et objet: german designer sebastian herkner has collaborated with ames to create a home collection called ‘sala’. the intensive collaboration — which saw the designer traveling around colombia — has given rise to ‘caribe’, a new range of furniture suitable for outdoor use. comprised of a chair, a lounge chair, a large side table in high and low versions and a woven table, the pieces feature traditional woven plastic in combination with a tubular steel frame, typical of colombia’s caribbean-coast region where the furniture line has been handcrafted.

in this collection for ames, german designer sebastian herkner has taken different-colored plastic strands and has woven and combined them with a tubular-steel and steel-wire frame available with a galvanized or power-coated finish. the furniture has been produced by rafael and is friends in santa marta on colombia’s caribbean coast. presented at maison et objet and IMM cologne, these types of chairs are typical of this area of the country, where the popular momposino waving craft is taught in schools.
