seungtae jang gives new life to discarded objects

Challenging the design industry’s contribution to waste, Seungtae Jang gives new life to discarded items to create an abstract collection of wrapped furniture objects. The experimental series takes waste boxes, construction sign boards, paint cans, and agricultural hoses and tires and conceals them behind a thin skin of vinyl to create a new set of chairs and stools that can transform a space.

With his new project, the designer considers the ongoing dilemma between creative expression and its impacts on the environment by discovering new ways to create. Turning waste and discarded materials into useable objects and using minimal and harmless interventions, Jang increases the longevity of his found products.

concealing waste behing sculptural vinyl

Seungtae Jang’s WRAPPING series focuses on the value of objects according to their shapes. The furniture designer reconstructs discarded materials and objects, such as boxes, sign boards, paint cans, and tires, transforming them into decorative or useable chairs. Breathing new life into objects which have already once served their purpose and been discarded, Jang wraps them in vinyl and applies epoxy resin to create a different appearance. By adding just one layer to the original object, its original form is concealed and a new sculptural surface is created.

‘Chairs consisting of the physical properties of tires and hoses enter our space in a similar but different way. This chair is a process of finding the value of our lives, aiming for an attitude of looking at existing things differently rather than creating new things,’ notes Seungtae Jang.
