before forming his own atelier, shuang liang worked with a focus on architectural design, art installations, exhibitions, and furniture design. following this research, the beijing-based creative presents ‘tuann’, his first independent furnishing collection, in the greenhouse section of the 2015 stockholm furniture fair.

according to liang, the work is meant to ‘glow with a simple sense of peace and precision and represents a new interpretation of classical chinese furniture design.’ to do so, it is split into a curvilinear and a rectangular series, ranging from bookcases to stools and tables. each piece is both functional and sculptural, and provides a sanctuary-like space that allows light and shadow to interact. during formal experiments, curved and straight lines were identified to correspond to concepts of ‘he’ and ‘she’; the two genders engage in an ongoing conversation in terms of form and use.
