at london design festival 2017, simon hasan’s new collection sees the british designer’s work return to larger furniture and accessories. the new products welcome the release of the fourth generation of the ‘vase family’, as well as the ‘wing’ table. the forms of these pieces reference RAF halton, where simon’s father trained as an engineering apprentice almost 70 years ago.

on show at decorex during london design festival 2017, simon hasan’s fourth generation of the ‘vase family’ takes the shape of three objects with differently expanded wings. with the longest vase measuring 850mm in width and the shortest being 250mm wide, the designs enhance a 500 year old armour-making process, where vegetable tanned leather is irreversibly hardened through the careful application of heat. this technique ensures that each piece is unique and varies slightly in size, color and patina.

with the ‘wing’ table, full grain vegetable tanner leather is hand molded over a solid core and then hand stitched with linen thread. the low coffee table sits upon a black stainless steel welded frame that has been finished with multiple layers of beeswax. on the boundary between craft and industrial design, the product’s hand-made character means that each one varies in tone, color and edge finish.
