simon hasan: the great british road trip for vauxhall

british designer simon hasan was commissioned by vauxhall motors to design a range of products under the theme ‘the great british road trip’. the design drove throughout england to discover unique lost craft techniques that he could incorporate into his designs. the collection features three stoneware vases made with upper sections of cast iron, brass and bronze that are based on the form of beer flagons once used across the UK. the second element in the collection is an oak and steel cabinet. the wood base is made using an ancient technique known as cleaving where the wood is split rather than sawn to give the natural form of the tree and added strength. the steel cabinet is TIG welded and left raw to expose the evidence of manufacturing. the two parts are tied together with a leather strap. the final design is a wood stool that also uses the cleaving technique and features a bute tweed cushion and leather apron. simon hasan is a member of the vauxhall collective for 2008/2009. his commission pieces are for sale through the vauxhall collective website.

simon hasan’s work is the starting point for a range of furniture which will be shown at ‘the dock‘, a show curated by tom dixon during london design week 09
