the valencia-based smallgran studio’s rolo floor lamp is able to create both direct and soft light due to its flexible ‘petals’. each petal can be separately modified — extended or bent — and thus the lamp allows a different illumination to spread in each direction, generating several ambiances in the same room. the team explains that they have spent a year for developing and perfecting the project to achieve the final solution.

a petal consists of a steel strip, which keeps it straight or twisted, and a 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane sheet. once it comes to industrial production, smallgran plans to use plastic injection molding process instead of 3D printing. besides the petals, the prototype comprises a steel base into which the socket, the wooden shade ring, and the shade are screwed.
