the pompidou centre has invited smarin founder stéphanie marin to present the ‘schaise’ collection as part of the retrospective exhibition devoted to the work of david hockney. characterised by its tubular form and bright pastel shades, the series draws influence from the british artist’s well-known paintings and drawings.

functional, light and solid, ‘la schaise’ is a research study into flexibility. inducing a healthy posture, the piece strives to stimulate better blood circulation and increased tonicity. using stretched fabric across each of the tubular structures, the unified collection aims to provide comfort, simplicity, and style. borrowing hockney’s distinctive approach, the chairs resemble the reduced pictorial forms of the artists work through their vibrant hues and pop-art attributes.

smarin will present ‘la schaise’ at the pompidou centre until september 4, 2017.
