for woodlove, a curated space at the interior design show 2016 of locally-made ontario wood products, south street boatbuilders present the ‘hunt table’ and ‘lapin mirrors’, inspired by ancient techniques of forming and joining wood. made entirely from locally-sourced white ash, the toronto-based studio uses steam to bend parts over forms, and lashed joinery for structure. red rope details sewn into panels of wood conjure images of the expansive landscapes of the north, and play on the qualities and characteristics of white ash as a building material.

made of hard-wearing white ash salvaged from damaged urban trees, the ‘hunt’ coffee table references the elegant and functional design of traditional dogsleds of the canadian north. built with steam bending and lashed joinery, the unit is lightweight, versatile, and can be adapted to a wide range of interior settings. ‘hunt’ plays to the strengths of white ash as a building material, and conveys a contemporary aesthetic with its colored cord accents.

south street boatbuilders’ ‘lapin’ mirrors source the beauty of boreal landscapes and the ingenious tools humans have developed to conquer nature. the pieces pay homage to the ash tree’s versatile wood. a continuous loop of steam bent white ash wood achieves a strong curved form with minimal material waste, while a sewn, red cord detail serves not only as a visual accent, but has a structural purpose in holding the mirrors’ frames together in tension.
