Joshua Ashish Dawson imagines climate-centric wellness

In a world where climate change shapes our daily realities, the nexus between wellness and our environment emerges as the paramount concern. Joshua Ashish Dawson’s short film introduces Spa Sybarite — a speculative Climate Wellness Center — which delves into a future where wellness outpaces traditional healthcare, where today’s technologies are reimagined for climate-centric treatments, and where luxury establishments signal both opportunity and warning.

Through a series of modern technologies forging climate-centric treatments, the futuristic spa concept explores the intersections of health, environment, and commerce in a speculative venture that mirrors the urgency of our times. From nutrition-centric hydroponic systems, IV therapy and outdoor bathing complexes to a solastalgia therapy home builder and immersive virtual reality caves, all features of the facility have repackages contemporary technologies as ‘climate-specific treatment’.

‘The project is a piece of design fiction or speculative architecture that is meant to render and highlight a plausible scenario to provoke and instigate thought on the impact of climate change on health and wellness as well as their corresponding industries,’ notes filmmaker Joshua Ashish Dawson. This illuminates the phenomena of disaster capitalism, where crises, including climate change, are seen more as lucrative opportunities than pressing issues.

Luxury establishments, such as the conceptual Spa Sybarite, serve as forewarnings of a new architectural trend capitalizing on the crisis. Such spaces represent critical architecture, aiming to spotlight a likely future and stimulate contemplation on how climate change might reshape health, wellness, and their affiliated sectors.

According to the World Health Organization, while the ramifications of climate change on human health are indisputable, gauging the exact scope and implications of many climate-sensitive health threats remains a challenge. In the short to medium term, the effect on health will hinge primarily on population vulnerabilities, their resilience to current climate changes, and the pace of adaptation. Yet, as we peer into the future, questions arise about our ability to adapt when the environment becomes increasingly inhospitable.

Notably, the wellness sector has outpaced traditional healthcare, even surpassing pharmaceutical gains. It seems that wellness, rather than traditional healthcare, may be best poised to address the business implications of climate change, including the demand for remedies for ‘climate anxiety’. In a world where the climate crisis affects everyone, businesses are evolving to incorporate climate conscious strategies.
