the design of steelcase series 1 chair started from responses to constraints rather than as a brand new concept. experts in all fields, from material innovation to the supply chain, considered how an office chair could improve in all aspects.

‘instead of putting design at the forefront of the problem, we put the other disciplines at the forefront of the problem. this illustrates the fact that creativity isn’t exclusively a design problem,’ says bruce smith, steelcase director of global design. ‘creativity is a problem for all disciplines and all functions. so, anything we can do to elevate creativity for all disciplines is a powerful thing.’

the steelcase series 1 excels in all criteria. its lightweight slim profile fits easily into any office setting with an extremely small footprint. importantly, the design incorporates the brand’s signature integrated liveback technology that allows the chair back to change shape and mimic the user’s spine throughout the day. finally, it has been designed with circularity in mind, being up to 95% recyclable and not using any glue in construction.

to further fit any office interior, the chair is available as multiple options: task chair, stool, headrest, coat hanger and armless. as well, over 200 color combinations are on offer. this includes a wide range of shell and finish options, and also mix-and-match knit, flexor and lumbar colors.
