named after the most isolated tree on earth, DRIFT’s tree of ténéré sculpture represents the strongest symbol of life flourishing in the most difficult circumstances. only ever seen before at burning man in 2017, the site-specific interactive light sculpture will plant its roots in deep ellum, texas this fall, which is known as texas’ top destination for arts, music, culture, and innovation.

curated by goldman global arts for westdale management, the interactive sculpture by DRIFT explores the inherent connectivity of nature and technology and will form a permanent light sculpture. it will be located in the outdoor walkway of the epic dallas located at 2550 pacific avenue. the sculpture will create a unique moment in contemporary culture by synchronizing people with their environment using technology and rhythms that resonate with our natural instincts.

the tree of ténéré weighs 10,000 kgs and emits patterns of different speeds and colors produced by 75,600 environment-reactive led lights. based on local environmental factors such as wind and sunlight, the interactivity of the piece is enhanced via the use of DRIFT’s uniquely developed swarm algorithm, creating a dynamic choreography. it was designed to elevate the quality of life for local residences and visitors of deep ellum by changing the way people view and interact with art and how they perceive their environment.

a canvas of light and music with infinite possibilities

since its 2017 debut, the artwork has been re-developed for current viewing by drift and co-creators, zachary smith and marc slee. for this latest installation, drift utilizes a unique digital modelina method, that simulates the growth of a tree as in nature, incorporating factors such as the work’s specific location, gravity, and incidence of light to create a piece entirely unique to its location.
