studio furthermore, present their latest collection and undiscovered design processes in REPLICA. the collection of experimental furniture, lighting and objects has been realised using unique methods and techniques developed by the london-based practice.

referred to as the ‘lost foam’ processes, studio furthermore have developed original replication methods working with both ceramic and aluminium alloy materials. on display at the aram gallery in covent garden, designs demonstrate their carefully handcrafted nature, born out of an ubiquitous foam material with each item constituting an ‘original’.

when developing this body of work, studio furthermore were inspired by rocks, clays and mineral ores of iceland – a shifting landscape of geological processes observable in foamy lava rocks, cooled magma debris, and soils rich in minerals – resembling some of their material experiments in terracotta and aluminium. during the lost foam ceramic process, a foam original burns away inside a kiln leaving behind a one of a kind terracotta foam REPLICA.

the studio also developed an alloy process entombing a foam original in sand before molten alloy is poured over it and in turn vaporizing, leaving behind a metallic REPLICA. the concept centres itself around the necessary sacrifice of an original work to create a REPLICA.

the collection includes a standing light, mirror, pots and tables with each ceramic part carefully handcrafted out of foam. also displayed will be series of tests and experiments that bear strong resemblance to these collected samples as well as a film to further explain the process.
