la linea by studio iyra fuses design and technology

Bridging the spheres of design and technology, studio iyra presents La Linea, a digitally crafted parametric chair, which, as its name suggests, forms an infinite loop that culminates in a functional seating system. In its design, the chair’s form represents a singular line regulated by a specific design orientation, with its entire volume divided into various components. Each element, designed with an overlapping joint system, interacts with the overall structure in harmony while ensuring strength and stability. In doing so, the team highlights the crucial interplay between manufacturing in design and design in manufacturing, showcasing the broad spectrum of their importance and their intersection.

The core concept driving La Linea is the desire to blend the perspectives of both designer and manufacturer to craft furniture that is both sculptural and functional. studio iyra (more here) has digitally crafted the chair, designing it for semi-automated fabrication using 3-axis CNC machining and digital component mapping. This approach enables manufacturing without the need for traditional carpentry skills, broadening the scope for designers to create components without being constrained by typically encountered manufacturing complexities.

Each component is machined from an HDHMR sheet, the entire surface of which is utilized without producing any wastage. To reduce machining complexity and production costs a desired thickness of 24mm was achieved by gluing together two 12mm pieces. Optimizing for precision, the components are then nested on a plane for machining with dog bone joints, further avoiding fillet formation during milling. Properly nested profiles are assigned toolpaths then sent for machining, following which the numerous discrete components are mapped for easy assembly through digital sequencing, glued, and configured together based on the digital plan. Finally, a hand router was used to create fillets, and the chair was then sent to a paint booth for the desired finish.
