created by oslo-based designer thomas jenkins of studio jenk, ‘coiled’ folding café chair combines modern manufacturing techniques with traditional spring-based design methods. the joint of the folding chair is a spiral spring, made possible by CNC bending methods, that provides for extremely tight folding and efficient storage.

‘coiled’ was on exhibition at ‘greenhouse’ during stockholm furniture fair 2012.

  • But does it float?

    fred says:
  • This could become a classic! Excellent thinking!
But.. I don’t get it…how does the rear leg-bow stop against folding outwards? As far as I can see it this chair can’t work safely, you would need chains or elbow-like links to stabilize it.
Or might the rear leg-bow make a triangle with the rear end of the seat, same length as folded – than you could add a fourth frame with twisted joints.

  • It doesn’t look like the designer needs our help ! Congratulations on a neat mechanism. It can’t have been easy to make — or to prototype for that matter ?

    SDR says:
  • Nice! but yeah, as Dirk16 points out, how DO the back legs keep from folding all of the way out? works-like or looks-like prototype?
