‘the birth’ – studio job studio job gallery, antwerpon now until march 19th, 2010

the belgian duo studio job (nynke tynagel and job smeets) have presented their newest initiative, their own exposition hall, in the heart of antwerp, where their atelier – in addition to an office in the netherlands – has its home base. the industrial space is located on the ground floor of a former cigar factory on the begijnenvest, close to the museum quarter in het zuid. the inaugural exhibition is titled ‘the birth’, an exclusive showcase of work by the duo themselves.

the space is also meant to function as a venue and refuge for other artists, designers, curators, galleries and museums. just as smeets and tynagel cannot be reduced to the status of artists or designers, but rather occupy a unique position somewhere in between, studio job cannot simply describe the hall as a gallery. ‘call it a chameleonic space,’ says smeets.

the exhibition includes the ‘gospel’ collection, that was realized with support of ING and royal tichelaar makkum. the two large glass-in-lead windows ‘the birth’ and ‘the crucifixion’ illustrating a central notion of the catholic faith. the 17 piece service made from 2000 kg of rusted foundry iron, ‘the last supper’ is also being shown.
