on designboom’s recent trip to dutch design week 2011, we visited ‘studio job house’ in bergeyk, netherlands.
what originally started as a weekend home for job smeets and nynke tynagel of studio job developed into a museum
showcasing modern dutch and belgian design.

in the course of the 60’s bergeyk was transformed into hub for creative minds when architect and furniture designer gerrit rietveld  got a commission there. one project led to another for rietveld and other influential dutch architects, and eventually the suburban landscape was an established cultural landmark attracting prominent designers, architects and artists.  things came to an end in the economic crisis of the 1980s, and many of the homes were sold.

the villa, purchased by studio job, was commissioned in 1958 by the director of the royal agio cigars to architect
D L sterengerg, one of rietveld’s pupils. characteristically modern, it is a functional and cost-efficient
with clean lines and a flat roof. during the renovation, studio job aimed to restore the house to its original glory
and thus transformed it into a hub of modern design.

throughout the past few years, the studio job team has been accumulating historic objects related to their field of design.
the villa in bergeyk gave them a place to house their collection. the semi public house-museum is an example of
the design community coming together to display their enthusiasm for their art. iconic companies including royal auping
royal mosa and van besouw donated pieces to the collection. graphic designer wim crouwel has created a new
work of art for the space entitled ‘grid’ among other contributors
