studio job: pussy cats
carpenters workshop gallery, london

studio job idolizes the sly and ruthless nature of pussy cats in their latest collaboration with carpenters workshop gallery. motivated by their love for their own feline, paula and jambe blanche, the dutch-belgian duo of job smeets and nynke tynagel have captured the merciless and sometimes cold-hearted nature of the typically domesticated mammals, by rendering them as sculptural lighting pieces.

the ‘pussy cat’ collection of lamps are available in four positions: ‘cat fight’, ‘cat attack’, ‘cat hiss’ and ‘cat swipe’ to fully express the varied and aggressive nature of the furry animals. each one is made from patinated and polished bronze, with hand blown glass eyes that are illuminated with LED light fittings – further exposing their maliciousness.

nynke and I love our cats paula & jambe blanche. paula is an orphan from a village called echt in the southern part of limburg. jambe blanche is a ‘belle dame’, 17 years old. she was born in the cellar of our first studio… jambe blanche has 4 white legs, both spotted with black like little dutch cows. in fact, we only allow black & white spotted cats in our house in the forest.

cats can be quite ruthless. I believe cats are, as we say, autistic to a certain extent as in they can’t really connect into others’ emotions.

let’s be honest: cats kill birds, butterflies, mice and sometimes a mole. yet at the same time they sleep in our bed. some say cats are more closely related to humans than we assume.

they have a point? bien-sur que non!‘ – job smeets, studio job
