joris de groot's pleated seat's is made of 'colback', a fabric for air filters

joris de groot is a designer searching for the connection between craftsmanship and industry in his work. interested in collaborating with the industry, joris creates his own workplace within the factory grounds. once familiar with the process of the available existing techniques, he experiments with the available machinery and materials for new innovative uses. for the ‘pleated seat’ collection of chairs, studio joris de groot was inspired by the production processes of air filters, a product made of low & bonar’s ‘colback’.

inspired by the construction of filters made of different layers and materials, de groot started his research for designing a new product within the project titled ‘in4nite’. especially the structure of the pleated colback and the strength that this material brings into the product were key for the design. initiated by technical textile manufacturer low & bonar, studio joris de groot collaborated with a factory with a specialization in laminating textiles and a factory specialized in pleating.

in the search for the right strength, visual effect, and tactility, the designer combined different materials with colback and played with various pleating patterns. the collection of chairs created by studio joris de groot offers a new application possibility for colback in combination with different materials, using existing industrial techniques in a new way.

mid-april the pleated seat collection will travel to italy to be presented during milan design week 2018. studio joris de groot exhibits at a new venue from ventura projects, called ‘ventura future’ from 17th – 22nd april.
