studio sam buckley converts victorian butcher shop into multicolored chinese cafe
the space reveals a hybrid interior decor, with muted, historic details complementing a modern-day and vibrant color palette.
the vibrant bing ting chinese cafe by studio sam buckley
painted in a spectrum of bold colors and patterns, the bing ting chinese cafe is a converted victorian butcher shop in kingston upon hull, england. interior designer sam buckley completed the project as a hybrid interior decor — combining highly vibrant, modern accents that reflect the surrounding food and culture with the shop’s existing and historic muted details.

elevating victorian-era details with a pop of modern accents
since the bing ting cafe is located in a listed building, sam buckley (see more here) had to preserve the original space’s wall and floor details. even more, the final color palette centers around a yellow hue that nods to the existing tiles. from there, he began injecting multicolored furniture objects, including pedrali‘s dome chairs by odo fioravanti and elliot tables by patrick jouin, retro-inspired lighting, and a tri-colored counter. combined, these new additions nicely blend with the victorian era designs — revealing a modern-day space that offers a gentle return to past centuries.

buckley also teamed up with global manufacturer forbo (see more here) to carefully cover the existing floor tiles with an off-white layer that lets the cocktail of colors pop out even more. naturally, the historic tiling suffered no damage and can be recovered anytime.
