ahoy and kaa lamps reimagine the nautical monkey’s fist knot
StudioKnob’s Ahoy Table Lamp and Kaa Floor Lamp reimagine the nautical Monkey’s Fist knot and the fluid motion of a serpent in illuminated, tactile forms. Braided from nylon rope and anchored by modernist-inspired concrete bases, these lamps invite interaction and exploration, juxtaposing a soft glow with solid foundations. They have been developed through experimentation and collaboration with local artisans, offering a fresh take on lighting that is both playful and refined.

studioknob juxtaposes soft light with raw concrete
The sculptural lighting fixture Ahoy features a dramatically oversized knot, created with multiple layers of white rope resting on golden knitting needles. When illuminated, the knot radiates a soft glow, while the concrete base, inspired by the geometric purity of Bauhaus and the raw aesthetic of Brutalism, anchors the piece. Israel-based StudioKnob integrates subtle details like a sensor-embedded concrete surface for easy dimming and a leather handle for mobility.
Complementing this, Kaa appears with an elegant design that ascends gracefully along a golden rod. The lamp’s spiral form recalls the smooth, coiled movement of a snake, with a braided nylon rope housing an LED light source that is both touchable and flexible. The lamp’s brass rod emerges from a Brutalist-inspired concrete base, echoing the same stylistic principles as the Ahoy lamp — modernist geometry and exposed materials. It is further equipped with subtle functional elements, such as an embedded sensor for dimming and a leather handle for ease of movement. ‘Together, these two pieces exemplify a collection that honors material traditions while pushing the boundaries of contemporary design,’ note the designers.
