chicago-based designer sung jang‘s recent work ‘comb pattern collection’ is an investigative research into the relationship between elegance and efficiency within a contemporary context. on display at the AA design museum, the designer argues that in order for elegance to occur in variety of entities a high efficiency between the initial effort and the achievement must be perceivable. through specific programming of digital manufacturing techniques, he creates a fabrication process which results in a pattern similar to the pre-historic decorative motif called ‘comb patterns’. in the collection including furniture and objects, small fabrication efforts result in an output beyond ordinary expectation.
