levent ozruh introduces ‘primitives [1]’, a family of swirly organic-shaped tables, 3D printed out of quartz sand. manufactured by sandhelden in germany, each object showcases a distinct morphology with a raw character, intended to re-evaluate and possibly answer the question of ‘what makes an object primitive; the generated aesthetics, the tools of creation, or the society it is produced for?’

while the formal language of the ‘primitives [1]’ by levent ozruh and sandhelden, appear to be archaic, the means of creation explores contemporary computational processes. this leads to a gap between the appearance and the codified recipes that are written as a series of algorithmic procedures by the designer. ‘the role of the designer is akin to a chef who also experiences a similar gap,’ explain the creators. ‘following the creation of a recipe, there is a delay before the tasting, after which there is a cyclical, iterative process that calibrates the methods of production; action and reaction are not real-time.’

once each piece is printed, the loose sand is carefully cleaned, then post-processing helps to enhance strength and durability. further sanding creates a smooth functional surface on top of the nightstand, and then finally the table is coated in a matte, light grey. swirls and indentations are brought to the fore by simple coloration and the play of light and shadow. this is further amplified by the textured finish of the quartz; as light levels change throughout the day the coloration of the primitives changes emphasizing the transience of time.

the additive manufacturing process has created objects that are related but not identical. these six objects are a demonstration of the control of complexity exercised by the designer, curating the varied entities produced by the algorithm’s rules. each piece retains integrity but they all have different functional capacities. for example, in some, the useable surface area is reduced, allowing design drivers to take precedence and, in others, the opposite is true.

sustainability is an important concern and the manufacturing process was chosen to minimise resource use. in terms of energy, 3D printing with sand doesn’t require high melting temperatures, and to improve raw material efficiency the sand can be recycled up to 8 times in the production, thus minimizing its waste.
