thien nguyen: flexy light

this light by designer thien nguyen is simply made from folded craft paper and can be molded into a variety of shapes. nguyen designed the light while studying under professor sylvain allard at UQAM in montreal. the light’s form is its own packaging, protecting the light bulb inside. once the small paper sleeve is removed, the lampshade can be stretched and compacted into the desired shape. the paper is folded with a complex geometric pattern that allows it to take on any shape with enough structural integrity. the simple design elevates the humble paper material. the design was awarded first place in the student category of the young package 2009 design contest from the czech republic.

  • Great design. Only the use of paper and giving is some kind of structure by just folding it. It’s eco-design to me, and it also makes it possible to give it a unique shape, and changing it if desired. So, this will prevent it from being thrown-away quickly, I guess.
