in the same way that injection molding has changed our method of production, 3D printing has changed injection moulding. for a long time, the technology has been either a costly tool for prototyping, or a gadget to play around. starting the project ‘7days7stools’, thorsten franck‘s aim was to find a new way of manufacturing objects at human scale. thus, in cooperation with ‘the delta tower’ team of hypecask and colorfabb, the collective has created a stool a day for one week using custom-made injection molding.

the translucent geometries

the forms are additive, created by an infinity-drawn spiral with a line width that defines the wall thickness. the curve is grown into the volume by drawing the body and can be customized or changed at any time. the resultant geometries make references to the folds of origami and the precision of mathematically-derived patterns. these ornaments make sculptures out of light and shadow, with a minimum amount of material that exhibits translucent qualities.

  • “free form injection moulding”? You mean 3D printed. Why all the BS, just call it what it is.

    Kilbenator says:
  • are they using 3d printing to create injection molds? the article is not very clear on what we are seeing. It looks like 3d printed but I take it the plastic has been further processed or something? If its 3d printing call it as such and do not try to make it seem like something else.

    Noah Hornberger says:
  • and what is ‘the spiraling material’? is it ABS plastic or PLA, coming off the reel or something else? I hope its something else and not just a picture of yellow filament coming off a reel!

    Noah Hornberger says:
  • Sorry Noah… What you see is exactly yellow filament. I have some at home so I am 99% positive…
