in a building dating back to the early 20th century, behind an exterior art nouveau façade, is a modern, timeless interior by architect tiago patrício rodrigues. the small apartment unit is furnished with shapes, materials, and finishes of multiple eras; countless stories, aesthetics, and time periods complement each other for a quaint, functional whole.

the living area is furnished with a 1950s side board storage system. upon which sits several art works, including the screen-print skull by julio pomar. worn out persian carpet accompanies a 1960s danish center table with rosewood top. a contemporary–gray linen upholstered–sofa is accented by west coast cushions by pura cal. mauricio klabin’s ‘eclipse’ table lamp is also present. in the dining area, marcel breuer cesca chairs nestle against a vintage, dark glass/chrome table.

a large wardrobe was custom fitted to the master bedroom. a floor lamp with five globes rests next to le corbusier’s LC10 table, and a typical industrial chair. the large, walnut bed frame and drawers are all from the art deco period. also displayed is the ‘artichoke’ lamp by poul henningsen, the collage work ‘goodbye portugal’ by tiago patrício rodrigues, and ‘ikat’ cushions from indonesia.

‘mutene’ wood panelling hides entrances to the bathroom and closet in the hall. also in the space, a multicolored lamp stands aside a mongolian goatskin chair. water green bisazza mosaic covers bathroom walls, with ‘tiger skin’ marble flooring and countertop. the second bedroom is a mid 60s danish, oakum silk upholstered chair. religious paintings, and a persian rug. a golden mirror sits above fairly contemporary ceramics.

the kitchen is characterized by an original, yellow lioz stone glass mosaic chimney, and work counters of azulino cascais stone. a 40s vintage lamp carries on the room’s yellow vibe. on the bench, is a fruit bowl by fernando brízio. the apartment makes up for lack of size with its huge, contemporary collection/exhibit of designed goods and furnishings.
