tokujin yoshioka has debuted ‘reality lab’ in aoyama, tokyo: a colorful retail space for the japanese fashion house issey miyake, created as experimental shop to display their innovative couture creations. the layout, specifically its stark organization of visual elements, optically highlights the cutting-edge garments presented. transparent glass frames draw the silhouette of the main staircase, revealing fragments of merchandise beneath. peeled away wall exposes the building’s concrete shell, juxtaposed by neon-colored aluminum shelving and architectural beams. hanging items — like pants, shirts and sweaters — float from vibrantly hued panels seamlessly extending from the structural framework, purses suspend from the facade of the wall, and footwear rests on metallic shelves. the new retail location has materialized through a longtime collaboration between yoshioka and miyake, as their shared minimalist aesthetic has led to creative projects in both the commercial and product design sector.
