tokujin yoshioka: tornado
saga prefectural museum of art, japan
on now until august 2, 2015

tokujin yoshioka sends a ‘tornado’ of his work through the saga prefectural museum of art in japan. the first exhibition to open the cultural institution after a recent renovation, ‘tornado’ is an all encompassing installation that takes over the space’s new galleries. the scenography of the show appears like a natural phenomenon has occurred, with more than 2 million straws dispersed in billowing formations throughout the interior — as if mimicking the clouds seen when a violent storm passes through an area.

the exhibition sets the mood for some of the japanese’s designer’s most recognizable works, each of which recall the simplicities of nature, expressed in subtle details and materials which project a sense of calm and collectedness. among the pieces on show are yoshioka’s ‘water block’ bench, natural crystal ‘venus’ chair, and ‘honey-pop’ seating.

‘tornado’ marks the creative’s first solo exhibition in his hometown of kyusyu, japan. tokujin yoshioka saga prefectural art museum designboom
