estonian rapper tommy cash (TOMM¥ €A$H) makes a bold impression to mark his first collaboration with adidas. announcing the release of the world’s longest adidas original superstar — available only in russia — the now-shoe designer notes on instagram: ‘when I said to adidas that I want to make the longest shoe in the world as our collab they were like WTF tommy. but 5 months later here we are.’ of course the superstar x tommy cash has caused an eruption of question marks online. always on brand, the artist continues: ‘because I’m tired of stock boring ass plain ass trendy ass shit.

the elongated pair are one-of-a-kind, made only for tommy cash. the market-ready version are still superstars, either black or white on each side, but in a regular size.

deemed both ‘avant-garde’ and ‘useless’ by commenters, the elongated superstar x tommy cash adidas originals say a lot about the sneaker industry. many high valued shoes never hit the pavement and are kept as collectibles to be rarely worn. this was highlighted when artist/architect daniel arsham recently caused a stir on social media when he captured the state of his dior air jordan 1’s — so worn out they seemed almost sandpapered. while most collectors keep their sneakers locked away, a limited edition pair of long, un-wearable superstars might be just as useful as they are avant-garde. elongated and outrageous footwear appears to be relevant right now as AVAVAV has also revealed its own more monstrous version.

the adidas x tommy cash originals superstars have been crafted throughout with genuine leather. the insoles feature a yin-yang engraving to reference the black and white color scheme of the pair. elaborating on the design, the artist comments: ‘both the ‘angel’ and the ‘devil’ live in me at the same time — two opposites that are constantly fighting with each other. so why hide one side of your personality when they can perfectly coexist with each other. shouldn’t be too good or too bad. balance is needed. as two opposites of yin and yang, forming one whole. yes, these sneakers are different colors. after all, they reflect my mood, which changes every day. and I will proudly wear both versions of the iconic silhouette at the same time.’
