torafu architects + mikiya takimoto: space airvase

‘airvase’ space pattern by torafu architects in collaboration with photographer mikiya takimoto all photos by fuminari yoshitsugu

japanese studio torafu architects have introduced the 12th variation of their ‘airvase’ collection entitled ‘space’, a first-time artist collaboration with photographer mikiya takimoto. the delicate flat-packed bowls, which gain strength when expanded and pulled, now exhibit mikiya takimoto’s graphic portrayal of the NASA space program, following the shuttles from 2009 until their retirement in 2011.

takimoto has received numerous accolades for his work as well as being published several times since beginning his career at age 23. the ‘airvase’ artist series gives takimoto’s pictorial investigations a 3d platform with double-sided prints of his interpretations of space, and is on show as part of the ‘paper photo project’ from the 6th to the 8th of June at tokyo big sight.
