PAYING HOMAGE TO THE JOY OF LIVING BY THE SEA

maison&objet’s 2017 designer of the year, tristan auer, has brought the beach to the 2022 spring edition of the design event. the architect has designed the mariage fréres pavilion, which has been installed in the center of hall 7. named the beach club, the temporary space pays homage to the art and joy of living by the sea.

famous for his elegant work and discretion as a person, the architect and interior designer’s specialization lies in ultra high-end residences, boutique hotels and retail showrooms for brands like puiforcat, cartier, chanel and nina ricci. as well as bespoke furniture, auer’s interest in car tailoring has seen him transform the interior of automobiles into luxurious environments using materials like leather and cashmere.

‘my works don’t talk about me,’ he says. ‘I think of myself as a made-to measure tailor; I adapt to each of my clients to help them continue to write their own stories and play with their colors.’

THE BEACH CLUB BY TRISTAN AUER RECALLS PRE- AND POST-WAR FRENCH BEACHES

co-produced with mariage frères tea company, the beach club recalls pre- and post-war french beaches, and their pastel-colored striped cabins. here, visitors can enjoy light meals while sipping tea on a deckchair or on the terrace. a massive floating streamer — similar to sky banners towed by planes — displays a message by the designer himself, ‘some people used them to declare their love: this will be my marriage proposal.’

last but not least, auer’s own white lotus, like the one of james bond in the spy who loved me (1977), is parked in front of the club, welcoming visitors. from the car to the lifeguard chair and the diving pontoon, nothing has been left out.

‘I had a free hand with the theme,’ concludes the designer. ‘I wanted to celebrate lightness, freshness and joy.’
