the garden of SAMPIO laboratory, a korean foods company, has a new interactive installation in the form of ‘memorial pot’, a stepped iron landscape designed by unsangdong architects. the artificial hill incorporates the re-appropriation of three old chimneys that were part of a soy sauce factory 60 years ago which now function as planters. their integration references the client’s business of producing edible fare, as well as recalling the history and prominence of fermented foods — a process which is conducted in special pots and jars — in korean culture. the intervention frames the three brick cylindrical structures offering employees a place to sit and view the surrounding landscape.
