spotted at ‘now! le off’ exhibition during paris design week 2011, german designer veronika wildgruber presented her series of ‘softwood’ chairs. at first glance the furniture seating seems to be upholstered, expressing the soft appearance of cushions. however, upon closer inspection, one observes that the seat and back of each chair is sculpted in solid wood, hand carved to give tufted and quilted looks. despite their hard material, they are still quite as comfortable as the perceived cushioned seat. the series is composed of three chairs, each with different upholstery pattern.
