fashion house, versace, is to build the world’s first refrigerated beach. the waterfront space will act as a way of keeping beach strollers cool during the hot days of summer, which can average 40 to 50°C. located next to the new palazzo versace hotel, the refrigerated system will operate using heat-absorbing pipes located under the sand. these pipes will contain coolant to absorb heat from the beach’s surface, and will be accompanied by giant wind blowers. due to open in 2010, the project is receiving much criticism for the carbon footprint it will leave on the environment, something which is an issue with many of the projects that are being erected in dubai.
