diane wallinger, founder of positive fashion design studio DNWLLNGR, introduces the ‘care of self, care of world’ project, composed of a 4-look digital collection, a fashion-meditation video series, and a physical outfit that can help wearers build resilience to combat climate change. the project is based on the ‘earth logic’ fashion action research plan, a visionary and radical invitation to all fashion industry participants to debunk the idea that sustainability can be achieved within economic growth logic; and instead to ‘stay with the trouble’ of envisioning fashion connected with nature, people and long term healthy futures.

drawing from this ‘earth logic’ concept, originally created by kate fletcher and mathilda tham in 2019, the ‘care of self, care of world’ project by diane wallinger/studio DNWLLNGR seeks to enhance individuals’ positive emotions through sustainable and ecological fashion. with studies indicating that positive emotions can lead towards the adoption of the care of self-value, the ‘care of self, care of world’ collection and video series is set to trigger positive responses and encourage (self-)caring behaviours as a means to build mental resilience towards climate change’s psychological challenge.

the digital collection is presented in the form of editorial-style visuals, displaying the colorful garments and their bright gradient patterns. meanwhile, the vibrant monochromatic backgrounds generate positivity. the jackets’ shapes remind of duvets and cushions, while the ensembles are daywear versions of satin pyjamas. the lively colours, the jumpsuits, and belts, taken from superhero costumes, ooze with heroic inspiration and communicate energy, serenity and power to the individuals, inviting them to take care of themselves and become mentally and physically stronger. only then will they be prepared to take part in the fight against climate change.

the fashion-meditation videos immerse the viewers into the collection concept and enable them to live the outfits’ experience. they share a similar aesthetic to the visuals of the looks and are at the crossroad between fashion short films and meditation videos, hence the expression ‘fashion-meditation’. the videos audio-visually communicate the universe of each outfit and the positive emotions it triggers. besides, they embody the adoption of care of self, as fashion-meditation is a form of meditation, a way to take care of oneself and grow resilience.

a unique physical outfit was also created as part of ‘the care of self, care of world’ project, shaped as a gradient ensemble which is the fabric version of the fourth virtual look. digitally printed onto 100% recycled polyester heavy satin, this ensemble is a tangible element bridging the gap between digital and physical realities. it shows that a virtual design can swiftly translate into a physical, wearable piece; that the two worlds can enhance each other. you can find the care of self, care of world project on the london college of fashion’s sphere and graduate showcase.
