when developing plans for the ‘quadra’ chair, presented by viccarbe at salone del mobile during milan design week, italian designer mario ferrarini was inspired by the details, lines, and tools of architectural drawing. the shape of the chair’s metal structure references the refined elegance of the compass, while the coherent and balanced form pays homage to the geometric precision of a draftsman’s T-square.

mario ferrarini intended that the chair be used settings that require functionality and durability over time, such as educational spaces, coffee shops, meeting rooms — or even residential spaces. ‘quadra’, which ferrarini designed for valencia-based furniture brand viccarbe, comprises two metal profiles that complement a wooden seat — attached without any visible screws.

despite its apparent delicateness, ‘quadra’ offers the sturdiness and longevity of a chair that can be frequently used in a variety of settings. furthermore, the chair can be stacked in large quantities when in storage. the chair debuted at salone del mobile 2019, where viccarbe also presented new work by ramos-bassols and víctor carrasco. see other projects by the company on designboom here.
