milan-based designer vito nesta wants to walk us through his imaginary journey with ‘grand tour’ — a new collection of design objects featuring three series reflecting brazilian and japanese cultures. the plates, sculptures, and rug convey the artist’s impression of the countries through the colors and techniques he applied to the works.

in grand tour, the brazilian colonies are evoked by palm trees painted in green and ochre on the surface of the ‘las palmas’ plates, with a contrasting edge in metallic luster. the silent and dreamy atmosphere, in which — as the artist says — even people in the distance seem to be impregnated with eternity.

the solemnity of the burgundy, reinforced by the bright blue, is the protagonist of the ‘natsumi’ plates collection, which still reveals a timeless place with japanese charm, in which the temples built by man are surrounded by a fairy-tale nature. japanese culture is an inexhaustible source of inspiration that vito nesta manages to carry over to western everyday life with dazzling and seductive results, a fruit of a perfect balance between past and present.

same happens with the ‘wagasa’ rug: the characteristic umbrella of the japanese tradition, made of bamboo and rice paper, transforms into a decoration element opening up into multiple fans with colored geometric patterns.

completing the grand tour collection are the ‘anatomica’ ceramics, in which the anatomical contours of a hand are simplified to obtain a series of minimalistic objects that represent the archetype of iconic shapes. the artist chooses colors and motifs that summarize the style of the entire collection, where decoration is the leitmotif able to trigger imaginary thoughts and journeys.
