VOLA celebrates 50 years of beautiful, sustainable and original design

seemingly simple yet elegant in form and function, what makes VOLA and their designs iconic is a rich and pure, modern but still classic DNA that extends far beyond what just meets the eye. ever since arne jacobsen collaborated with the danish brand in 1968, their expert knowledge and specialist skills have combined to create products that are imitated the world over but are impossible to match.

in celebration of their 50th anniversary, we explore the six key values that make VOLA and their designs original.

when VOLA owner verner overgaard invited arne jacobsen to collaborate and create the ‘112’ for the national bank of denmark in 1968, an object of timeless beauty was born. the built-in tap concept hid the plumbing behind the wall, placing emphasis on the visible spout and lever, which prioritized function and proportion without compromising on style. whether taps, showers or accessories, the products VOLA has made afterwards have followed the famed designer’s fundamental principles, continuing a strong, iconic design tradition.

no matter whether its a tap or shower, every VOLA product is made to order; they do not not keep stock. their original modular design system, originated by the ‘112’ product, has expanded considerably, enabling architects and designers to specify a product perfectly configured to their space and requirements. endless customization and an array of finishes are available to help this further. this modularity ensures their designs remain elegant, efficient and contemporary over multiple decades.

modularity also enables colors and finishes to be tailored to preference, as seen with the ‘HV1’ basin mixer

at the VOLA factory near horsens, denmark, these products have been crafted beautifully for 50 years with generations of craftsmen and craftswomen sharing experiences and skills with one another. it is a hub of creative manufacturing where traditional craft and contemporary efficiencies combine. from machinists to designers and from managers to metalworkers, the workforce is proudly committed to contemporary danish design. an academy, which includes an apprenticeship program, allows experts to share their knowledge, and the history, ethos and processes at the core of brand. it is where their employees learn, as well as where architects, interior designers and professionals from all trades from all over the world come to study.

a core component of manufacturing, as well as the whole product process, is sustainability. VOLA believes they and their designs have a responsibility to the environment. there is an unwavering approach to quality control as only the best makes the most sustainable product. from the beginning, they are careful to source raw, honest materials from approved suppliers. then, 100% of all recycled waste is returned back to these suppliers in order to form new raw materials. the high levels of recycling are paired with low levels of energy use. water conservation is also a key factor for life cycle as precise, controlled flow performs efficiently whilst suiting all bathing preferences.

water, together with wellness, is at the heart of the brand. modern bathrooms are oases, a space of relaxation in our homes – and VOLA’s products help architects create this feeling. the simplicity and elegance of form, the precision of water flow, the tactile response of the controls, the careful and silent configuration of water and air are all ways their products establish an emotive experience. water is life and VOLA brings it as naturally and as purely as possible.

focusing on these core beliefs, as well as retaining purity through the modular design system, beautiful geometry and effortless functionality, VOLA ensures that the brand is always evolving. however, this promotes constant investigations and ideas into consistency, compatibility and flexibility, and how to innovate all these further. reducing water and improving efficiency, meticulous design and manufacturing, and adapting wellness according to our changing needs are all commitments that VOLA is always evolving. lots of characterizations comprise their DNA but, at its center, pioneering danish spirit truly epitomizes VOLA.
